What is an Import Export Code?

A 10-digit code issued by the DGFT, linked to your PAN, that customs and banks require before clearing any import or export shipment or trade-related remittance.

goods trade

Mandatory for Goods

Any import or export of physical goods needs a valid IEC on the shipping bill or bill of entry, no exceptions at customs.

Usually Needed for Banking

Pure services exports aren't always legally required to hold an IEC, but banks routinely ask for one before releasing larger foreign remittances.

questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IEC expire or need renewal? +
No. IEC has lifetime validity once issued. However, DGFT requires every IEC holder to confirm or update their profile once a year between April and June, missing this deactivates the code.
What is the government fee for IEC? +
₹500, paid once through the DGFT portal's Bharatkosh gateway. Our service fee is separate and confirmed after a free scope check, so there's nothing hidden.
Can a proprietorship get an IEC? +
Yes. Proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies can all apply. For a proprietorship, the individual's own PAN is used.
Is IEC the same as my GST number? +
No. GST registration lets you collect and claim tax; IEC authorises you to trade across borders. Since 2017 the IEC is linked to your PAN, but it's a separate DGFT registration you must apply for.
Do service exporters need an IEC? +
Not always legally required for pure services, but banks commonly ask for one before releasing larger foreign remittances or for GST export refund claims. Most consultants and freelancers doing regular international work register one to avoid banking delays.
